Midnight's Children wins the Best of the Bookers

IT’S Midnight’s Children again! Salman Rushdie’s magical treasure trove of a novel was today crowned the Best of the Bookers. The shortlist of six novels was selected by biographer, novelist and critic Victoria Glendinning, writer and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup and John Mullan, Professor of English at University College, London. The winner was decided by public voting. Midnight’s Children won with 36 per cent of the votes. Midnight’s Children won the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1981. It was then chosen as the Booker of the Bookers in 1993 to celebrate 23 years of the prize. With this win, Rushdie has scored a hattrick!

Midnight’s Children is still a wonderful, buoyantly self-delighted novel, where east and west—Sheherazade and Tristram Shandy—meet as they never met before.” John Mullan
