Surprise that Narayan "Malgudi" is not in the list. This fictional place has soul.

Yes, you are right. How could I have forgotten R.K. Narayan. His Malgudi stories are excellent. Thanks for reminding me about Narayan. Most of the novels in his ouvre are excellent. However, I have decided to choose The Guide to represent the best of his writings.
